Venice’s three historical   districts have been named to the National Parks Service
 historical registry.

Mayor John Holic called it “a real feather in the cap of the city. Really a phenomenal feat.”

That designation drove the number of historic dwellings and commercial buildings in Venice up from 104 listings
 instantly to 697.

“It’s pretty significant for the community to recognize the historic variety we have in

Venice,” said James Hagler of the Venice Archives. “It’s a privileged listing.   It takes
us to a different level and historical value.”

I notice that you have not mentioned our former wacko mayor Martini’s tirade against the Chamber of Commerce.  Why is that?
Curious George

Dear Curious:  First, you have covered most of the reason with your descriptive adjective above.
Secondly, this is the same ‘tired pony’ that Mr. Martin has been riding since the year one.  His paranoia is rampant and misguided but then, considering the source, we expect no less.
Like one hand clapping, it is kinder to ignore the unfortunate situation when one can not help nor change the outcome.

3/19/11

Since you have asked, here is the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce’s reply to Mr. Martin’s attack.

Replace the city's manager immediately with Woodley? She may be part of the problem, after all she watched Turners performance without a word of criticism. What's the rush, I think this is how we ended up with Turner in the first place. The current city department heads need to be re-directed to do their jobs, and if they can't, show them the door. Things MUST change, we don't have the money to waste on people who don't work. Simple procedure to handling problems needs to be followed or developed, this is not complicated, don't make it that way.

3/9/11

Oh, I forgot … am I bad?

The last city budget over site must have gotten your attention. It seems the City Finance Manager forgot to fund some pension plans from 2010. $800,000 to be a bit closer to exact, his excuse, he forgot??

Somebody must take out the trash when it comes to the leaders of this city...do you still think council was wrong in handling the City Manager??? Get a grip Venice, I say bring it on Bob, we elected you for a job, you are good at it, and no matter what the media says, the direction this city must take is clear.

Next question: How is Council and the Mayor supposed to balance the budget with this kind of financial mis-management from previous council?? What else was "forgotten" in the name of re-election?? I guess we know why Martin didn't run again.

Local Fleet Maintenance
Yea or Nay?

The recent"resignation" of Turner was not the display this city's residence needed. However, there is a reason, those that sit on council have a different inside look at the city's problems than the rest of us. The leadership at the city has been broken for some time, I am not speaking just of previous council, but the distant past. The city has department heads that no longer understand or know the job description for which they have been hired. These city employees answer direct to the City Manager not council, and corrections in budget and department management are not happening. This wandering path must end and leadership methods must change to avoid costly mistakes to its citizens.

This hard decision by council and Turner did not come with little thought, my hope is it has been for the best. Procedure in government is a double edged sword that can consume additional time but it can also lead to financial loss in the courts if not followed. Performance evaluations of department heads are an important part of how the city continues to run and adjust to the issues it faces. Our leaders can not "bury their heads in the sand" and let problems fester.

I doubt this is the last "resignation" we as a city will accept in the near future, our house must be cleaned, our direction must be clear, our leaders must do the jobs we have hired/elected them to do. I didn't like the direction of past council, so I voted them out.

Where were you Wickheaded One?

I attended the Feb. 8th City Council Meeting and there are many things to be said about the meeting but I am sure they will be well covered.

The only humor in the day was the ‘Media’ table set up for the reporters.  There sat Kim Hackett, Herald-Tribune, and Greg Giles, Venice Gondolier, as they should be.  What caused my barely self contained laughter was former Mayor Ed Martin also seated at the Media table.

I didn’t know that a Blogger was considered Media.

So my question is:  Where were you Wickheaded Woman?

Inquiring Mind.

WW:  Dear Inquiring, Media is an abused term in today’s world of the web.  Anyone can blog or have a website such as this one but true journalism is a profession that takes and gives much more than simply a space to expound one’s views.

The term ‘media’ was coined by ad agencies to refer to

Mass Mediums such as newspaper, tv, radio, print, etc.  In today’s world it can also loosely be considered websites that take advertising.

You won’t see me there because I have no desire to title myself as Media.  I do not take advertising on this site and I have no need to make myself appear Important.  This site is simply a labor of love for my city.

Thank you for asking and thank you for visiting.

Daniels Speaks Out

City Manager Debate

In spite of his (obviously) insincere apology to Council and the public, Mr. Daniel persist in his ‘Jerry Springer’ tactics of pursuing the subject of Mr. Turner’s employment.  Daniels insists on seeking media coverage even after Council has set a date (2/8) to discuss this issue.

Mr. Daniels, as the Mighty Hunter, has created his position of being the Bully with Mr. Turner, regardless of the merits of his performance as City Manager, as the Victim.

Bad tactics Bob!
Who wants
to support a Bully?

The citizens of Venice are sick and weary of controversy.  We want to get on with bringing Venice back to a stable financial position with good government.  That was why you were elected.

Did the voters make another serious mistake?

1/27/11

Daniels VS Turner
I voted for Daniels. Bob is a HA
MMER, and a hammer spends his day looking for a NAIL. Turner was hired by previous council to serve their needs, the current council has different needs, Turner must adjust or resign. The fact Turner was a go between for Martin and McKeon, moving from table to table in a restaurant, after the Sunshine suit was settled for a bunch of my money is an indication of his intent. I don't care if this wasn't a direct violation of the Sunshine Law, it is clearly a method to escape it, I can not tolerate any more of this. The political direction has changed to a more conservative approach to settle problems, we need hard work to right the wrongs.

1/27/11

It’s hard for me to believe that our current City Council would send one its members on a private mission to negotiate the termination of the City Manager. So I have to assume that Mr. Daniels acted without their knowledge, even if he believes that he was carrying out their sentiments. If otherwise, there potentially is another tiresome violation of the Sunshine Act, and I think this Council is too savvy to fall into that trap again. (Not to mention that if the outcome had been otherwise, he might have committed the City to a buyout in financially strapped times.) Changes in administration are hard, and one of the hardest aspects of them is decisions about the retention of those personnel who serve at the pleasure of the Council. Let’s hope that those decisions are made by the deliberations and consensus of the whole.

1/20/11

I think there is much more to the requested resignation request to be exposed. I don't think a aty like Daniel's went to the party without having some solid information and community support. His landslide election shows the citizens of Venice are tired of walking on eggshells and wanted a HAMMER to get City business under control. Good job Bob, you have my attention, bring the facts. Your supporters are eager to hear the rest of the story.

1/19/11

I am shocked and concerned that 1 Council member and 2 citizens (regardless of their past positions in city government) would take it upon themselves to approach the City Manager to ask for his resignation.

This should have been a full and open Council decision to take such action.

I supported Mr. Daniels in his election but I am disappointed that he would act in such a singular manner without regard for the remaining Council members and his constituents.

Thoughtless move Bob!

City garbage collection vs Waste Management

Why is it, one of the most profitable
US corporations can collect my garbage for much less than my city's Sanitation department??? Why do the city residence pay more for the same service? Three million dollars more (city estimate not mine) than a very profitable, money hungry corporate EMPLOYER?? The city's sanitation department gets PAID MORE than those at Waste Management for the same service............and we complain corporations are fleecing this country, it's our own wasteful government.

More Amazing Thoughts on Martin's Article

Martin exclaims that keeping the Commissions he likes helps with transparency. Is this not the same guy that used his personal computer to “talk” with the slang team outside of public view. That little act of misdeeds cost the taxpayers a large bill to Attorney Mogensen. That money was probably taken from the Beach Fund as well as others, now it seems that we will be needing the Beach Fund sooner than the 10 years originally planned. And now Ed weighs in too late.

Martin…behave like prior Mayors…you are not in office anymore…shut up, especially after your record of failure, misinformation and wasteful spending.

1/11/11

Wow … Venice has finally heard from former Mayor Martini!
After keeping a very low profile, he has come out against Council’s review of reducing and consolidating the city advisory committees/boards.

His guest column in the recent Gondolier, ‘Eliminating & Merging Committees Reduces Public Participation’ is truly amazing.  Remember, this is the same person that abolished the Airport Advisory Board because they would not rubber stamp his and the Slang Gang’s plans to waste millions fighting the FAA.

We should not be surprised but I mean … ‘Really!’
